Cybersecurity Alert: What Businesses Should Know About Rising Global Tensions

By: Jake Schulte, Director of IT Operations

As global events continue to evolve, cybersecurity agencies and private threat‑intelligence groups are urging U.S. businesses to stay alert. Recent geopolitical tensions involving Iran have prompted experts to issue heightened cyber awareness advisories, noting that periods of international conflict can often coincide with an increase in online threats.

While there is no current indication of widespread or targeted attacks against Networks Plus customers, this is an important time for organizations of all sizes to strengthen their cyber awareness and practice strong security hygiene.

Why Situations Like This Matter

Historically, times of geopolitical strain can lead to increased cyber activity from state‑aligned groups or ideologically motivated attackers. These incidents often focus less on sophisticated hacking techniques and more on social engineering — tricking users into opening the door to an attack.

In other words, your awareness is one of your strongest defenses.

Key Threats to Watch For

We encourage all customers to keep an eye out for the following common tactics:

1. Phishing Emails

Fake messages posing as:

  • Urgent alerts
  • Invoices or billing notices
  • Shipping updates
  • Security warnings

These emails often pressure you to click or respond quickly.

2. Credential‑Harvesting Attempts

Including:

  • Fake Microsoft 365 login pages
  • Fake VPN login portals
  • “Account verification” or “password reset” links you didn’t request

3. Unexpected MFA Requests

If you receive a multi‑factor authentication prompt without logging in, someone may be attempting to access your account.

4. Ransomware or Extortion Messages

Some may claim to be politically motivated to appear more credible.

5. Website Slowdowns or Disruptions

Often caused by denial‑of‑service (DoS) attempts during global incidents.

Recommended Actions to Stay Protected

To reduce risk and strengthen your security posture, we recommend the following best practices:

  • Be cautious with unsolicited emails, links, and attachments.
  • Verify any payment or account change requests using a second method of contact.
  • Keep systems and software fully patched and updated.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and enable multi‑factor authentication (MFA).
  • Report suspicious activity immediately.

Small steps can go a long way in preventing major disruptions.

Our Commitment to Your Security

Networks Plus is actively monitoring threat intelligence feeds and cybersecurity advisories. Our team will take appropriate action whenever needed and reach out proactively if we identify any risk that may directly impact your environment.

If you have questions, notice something unusual, or would like a review of your current security measures, we’re here to help.

Staying informed and prepared is the best defense.
